Chest Pain: Understanding Angina Symptoms

Typical symptoms of angina are pain in the left arm or left-sided chest pain. “We have known about angina pectoris for more than 146 years,” says Rohit R. Arora, MD, chairman of cardiology and associate chairman of medicine for research at the Chicago Medical School. “The typical symptom was thought to be chest pain radiating into the left arm. We now know of many different types of angina symptoms, such as right shoulder pain or shortness of breath.” And these "atypical" symptoms may also be much more common in women compared to their male counterparts.

Symptoms of angina include:

* An unpleasant feeling of fullness in the chest
* A sense of squeezing or pain in the chest
* Pain or discomfort in the shoulder, neck, jaw, arm, or back
* A sensation similar to indigestion

These symptoms occur when the heart is deprived of oxygen, usually during exercise, after which the symptoms go away. It’s important to remember that even though the angina has gone away, the risk of death from heart disease has not. You should see a doctor if you have these symptoms and learn about ways to prevent a heart attack.
